Devotional

Each of us go through life needing to eat, but not only do we need physical food, we need soul food. And similarly with the spirit as the body, our hunger presents us with a choice, we can either choose to eat that which nourishes us or destroys us.

A part of our inherited condition, sin, means that you and I are born with a propensity to be drawn to that which destroys us - to fulfil our hunger for meaning, love, purpose and any other manner of good hungers. We are tempted with the bread of sin, and in our hunger, sin is desirable. It promises to satisfy us, and yet leaves us hungry still, and in a worse condition than our original hunger.

The Bible promises us over and over again that God is all satisfying.

Psalm 16:11

"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

Psalm 107:9

“satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things”

Jeremiah 31:25

‘for I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish’

Ultimately, our hunger only makes complete sense in Christ. Have you ever had a craving for a certain kind of food, and nothing else would do? Well our souls crave Jesus, although we often don’t even know it. One great father in the faith said that our souls are restless until they find their rest in him. No matter what we turn to in order to satisfy our souls, pornography, work, family, friends, alcohol, partying, exercise, self improvement, intellectual pursuits, our souls remain hungry until we feast on Christ, who said 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’

Take your hunger to Jesus today and fill your soul with him. Come to the one who taught us that ‘blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled’ - Matthew 5:6

Prayer

Come to Jesus today asking him to satisfy the hunger of your soul; if you know where you soul needs nourishment in Christ today then bring that to him, and if you don't then ask the Lord to reveal it to you that you might being bring it to Jesus.
